SMOOTH SAILING
Black Pumas / Mercury Lounge, New York / July 29, 2019

You don’t need to travel far in Austin, Texas, to hear a great band.
Unfortunately for many Austin-based bands, traveling far from their hometown for a lengthy stretch of gigs is not feasible.
That’s not an issue for Black Pumas, who are on an extensive world tour in support of their self-titled debut album, which arrived in June via ATO Records. So far in the band’s brief history, silky-smooth singer Eric Burton (a California native who relocated to Texas) and intense guitarist Adrian Quesada (best known for his work with the Grammy-winning Grupo Fantasma) have received most of the attention. The group’s other members all contribute to the dynamic soul-rock mix, however, and they all get their moments to shine onstage, as they did July 29 during a sold-out early show at the Mercury Lounge in New York.
