Andy Warhol once predicted that everyone will be famous for 15 minutes.
For his ode to Rod Blagojevich, Golden Bloom frontman Shawn Fogel gives the former Illinois governor 60 seconds in the musical spotlight.
Fogel was flying to Chicago for a show in early December when he wrote the line “Chicago snow is white and it glistens in the night sky as I look out the window of my plane.”
“I wasn’t sure where to go from there,” he says.
That changed once he returned home and read about Blagojevich’s arrest on corruption charges. The end result: “Your Minute of Fame,” a melodic, upbeat rocker in which Fogel asks “Has everyone in power gone insane?” and blasts Blagojevich for shoveling “more onto the pile as he skips out on his trial.”
“It wasn’t until I sat down to record a quick demo that I realized it was a minute in length, and thus the title,” says Fogel, adding that it took about 10 hours to record the full song. “I usually consider a song to be finished when I don’t have anything left to say; I never really think about verses and choruses too much.”
The Montclair, N.J.-based multi-instrumentalist is working on a new Golden Bloom album, which he says is about 80 percent finished and should be released this summer.
“After seeing Stevie Wonder and The Jonas Brothers collaborate at the Grammys,” Fogel says, “I decided to go it alone in the studio. I’ve been playing all of the instruments on this album, and it’s a lot of fun and challenging at the same time. It’s not that I don’t trust other players or like the rest of my band — I’ve just been recording this way for years, so it’s what I’m used to. I have a feeling that Golden Bloom’s next album will be a real full band effort, but let’s focus on one record at a time.”
